Creating New Smiles..

Everything you wanted to know about Dentures (false teeth)

The teeth can fall out as a result of many things. It could be accidents, decay, gum disease or injury. This affects the health and appearance of the individual. It becomes more difficult to chew food, smile, laugh and all those little things we take for granted. And when teeth is missing in the gum for a long tie it can cause the face to sag because there is nothing supporting the facial muscles and this can make one look older than they are, and not in an attractive way.

Dentures are removable appliances that can replace missing teeth and help restore your smile. They can be made to closely resemble your natural teeth so that your appearance does not change much. Dentures may even improve the look of your smile. . Two types of dentures are available — complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

COMPLETE DENTURES

They are used when all the teeth have been removed and they can either be conventional dentures or immediate dentures. Conventional dentures are used about 8 to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has started their healing process.

Immediate dentures, however, are fixed immediately after the teeth have been removed.  They are made in advance and as a result the wearer doesn’t have to be toothless during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink over time, especially during the healing period following tooth removal. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared with conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process and generally should only be considered a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.

Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth is still present in the mouth, whether at the upper or lower jaw. Usually consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, which is sometimes connected by metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. This “bridge” is then cemented into place. Not only does a partial denture fill in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from changing position.

OVER DENTURES.

Sometimes some of your teeth can be saved to preserve your jawbone and provide stability and support for the denture. An over denture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth after they have been prepared by your dentist. Implants can serve the same function, too.

EATING WITH DENTURES.

Eating with dentures can prove to be a little tricky at first. With practice however you will get used to it. You are advised to start with soft food cut into little pieces. . Chew slowly using both sides of your mouth. As you get used to new dentures, add other foods until you return to a normal diet. Be cautious with hot or hard foods and sharp-edged bones or shells. And, avoid foods that are extremely sticky or hard. You should also avoid chewing gum while you wear the denture. Also, don’t use toothpicks while wearing dentures.

Like your teeth, your dentures should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque. Brushing also can help keep the teeth from staining. When the dentures are not being used, keep them put them in a safe place covered with water to keep them from warping.
