What are the dangers of Oral piercings (Lip and Tongue)?

Many people consider piercing their skin to be fashionable and stylish but piercing a part of your body, as cool and nice as it may look, has its own side effects. Piercing other parts of the body like your ear or your nose do not come with so much dangerous side effects, but piercing your lips or tongue is even worse because they have more dangerous consequences if wrongly or even if carefully pierced into your mouth.

There are many risks attached to oral piercings such as receding gums, cracked teeth, blood clots, heart infections, scar tissue and more.

There are quite a number of risks attached to oral piercings you might not even know about. These include:

Blood-borne diseases: oral piercings have been identified by the National Institutes of Health as a possible factor in transmitting hepatitis B, C, D and G.

Infection: There are millions of bacteria contained in our mouths, which can be infectible if you have an oral piercing because it is quite hard to handle the jewelry as soon as it has been placed in the mouth and this also makes the chances of you getting an infection higher.

Prolonged bleeding: It is also possible for you to get pierced wrongly with the needle, injuring a blood vessel and making you lose so much blood which could be difficult to control.

Pain and swelling: This is also another common consequence connected to oral piercing. If the pain and swelling gets to a very intense extent, and the tongue is very swollen, it could make breathing hard because the swelling has blocked the airway used in breathing.

Chipped or cracked teeth: If your teeth come in contact with this jewelry unexpectedly, they could sometimes chip or crack, causing fractured teeth. Teeth that have restorations, such as crowns or caps, can also be damaged if the jewelry unexpectedly hits them.

Injury to the gums: The jewelry can also cause the gums to recede. Adding to the problem of not looking attractive, recessed gums leave your tooth root more exposed to decay and periodontal disease.

Interference with normal oral function: This is also a common consequence. The jewelry in your mouth hinders you so you tend to pronounce words wrongly, swallow saliva more often, also chewing and swallowing too.

Endocarditis — oral piercing carries a risk of endocarditis, an inflammation of the heart valves or tissues. The wound created during oral piercing provides an opportunity for oral bacteria to enter the bloodstream, where they can travel to the heart.

How Long do Oral Piercings Last?

The thing is that as long as your mouth is free from infection and your oral piercings do not impede on your normal function, they can be in your mouth as long as you want them. Make sure you visit your dentist as soon as you notice a problem or pain in your mouth, in addition to your regular checkups. Due to the risks and consequences involved even after the initial wound has healed, such as the damage to your teeth or jewelry that becomes loose and gets ingested, it is best to avoid making oral piercings at all.
