THE FEARFUL DENTAL PATIENT

THE FEARFUL DENTAL PATIENT

The most common reason for putting off visiting the dentist is fear. Often, patients put up with unnecessary pain and discomfort for months until it becomes unbearable because they are afraid of visiting the dentist. An easily-remedied dental problem then becomes more difficult, more invasive and more costly to treat.

Many patients feel self-conscious about dental treatment and nervous about visiting the dentist. We have experienced and dedicated staffs that would listen to your fears and concerns and really try to understand why you are so nervous. We will then work with you to try to alleviate your fears, going at your pace and listening to you at all times.

In addition, we have 2 specialist anesthesiologists who are on retainer at our practice and whose sole function is to come in, sedate and monitor our patients who have a phobia for dental treatments or are to undergo advanced restorative treatment or surgical procedures Dr. Ogundeji who is the team lead oversees staff CPR training and other safety protocols

Some basic reasons for having sedation

  • Fear of dental treatment, dentists or the smells and sounds of the surgery
  • History of traumatic dental experiences
  • Very sensitive gag reflex
  • Difficulty opening the mouth for long periods
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Very sensitive teeth

We offer special care to our anxious patients through two forms of sedation to make their appointments more comfortable and relaxing.

  • The first type is called intravenous or IV sedation. The sedative drug is injected in a controlled manner, so that you feel relaxed during the dental treatment. You will have no memory of any treatment provided, thus allowing all treatment to those who are too anxious to have treatment. As well as helping nervous patients to relax. The use of IV sedation enables us to complete multiple procedures in one appointment, which otherwise may be too tiring or uncomfortable. It’s also very helpful for patients with strong gag reflex that can otherwise make treatment difficult.
  • The second type is using oral sedative drugs. This involves taking a sedative tablet, usually the night before and on the morning of treatment but under strict prescription from the dental surgeon

In conclusion, our team of dentists and nurses are specially trained to deliver these types of sedation and will make sure that you are safe and comfortable at all times during your visit. On your next visit to platinum dental surgery ask the dentist about the various sedative options available for you if you are naturally nervous about dental treatments
