Space maintainers
A removable space maintainer, of course, can be removed. A fixed space maintainer is fixed (i.e., held) to a tooth or to more than one tooth. Fixation usually is done by cementing the space maintenance appliance in place.
kids space maintainers are normally used to save the place for an adult tooth. If the space is not saved, the adjacent teeth may drift into an incorrect position, resulting in orthodontic issues, crowding, poor dental hygiene, and even discomfort.

What do kids space maintainers look like?
First the fissure is checked for decay. Then the process simply involves cleaning the tooth surface, preparing it with a special solution, and then applying the coating. No injections or drilling are needed, and the entire process is pain free. Most kids space maintainers are made of stainless steel, but some are made of plastic. They will typically be silver in appearance unless otherwise arranged and anchored in place by another tooth. Kids space maintainers can be removable, but some are cemented onto the abutment teeth (teeth on either side of the space)— these are called fixed space maintainers./div>
When baby teeth are lost early, the space for the replacement permanent tooth can be loss due to shifting, crowding, or bite changes. A removable space maintainer prevents loss of space by maintaining adequate room for the eruption of the permanent tooth in the area of the lost baby tooth. This is a preventive appliance, not an active tooth-moving appliance. Space maintainers will help prevent future problems, but typically do not correct any current problems with tooth alignment.
